Here they come. Bounding down the steps and turning the corner into the kitchen. Expectation and excitement on their faces. It’s December 1st! It’s time to start the Advent calendar.
Since the 7th century Christians have celebrated Advent as preparation and anticipation for the birth of Jesus Christ.

Darkness easily comes. Doesn’t it? The days get shorter. Disappointments come. Losses happen. Our way becomes dark. The hope of this verse is that the coming Jesus, Son of God, brings light. He forgives us. Lifts us. Repairs us. Offers us grace.
The babe to be born in the manger illuminates, like a candle lit in a dark room. He dispels the darkness, sadness, and gloom and replaces it with the light of his presence when we let him in. Let’s anticipate together the coming birth.
Enjoy this song of the Advent season, also anticipating the birth of Christ. O Come, O Come Emmanuel.
