The first week of advent calls us to hope. Nothing spells hope more than observing someone remaining faithful after being passed over for years or experiencing great loss. That’s the story of the priest, Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth.
Zechariah prayed so many times for a son. A son would bring joy and honor, carry on his name, and give status in the community to him and his wife. He prayed deeply and often for a child.
But it was the same response month after month, year after year. No baby. Hadn’t God heard? Hadn’t they served faithfully and been careful to follow God? Hope must have been gone at this late stage of their life.
Maybe he reminded himself of the words of Isaiah, the prophet: Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
He remained faithful when all hope seemed lost. He continued to pray.
Luke records that an angel visited Zechariah. The angel told him that his prayers were answered. He would have a son.
Have you experienced loss recently? Have you been passed over for years? Have you longed for something good and right that has not come?
Continue to ask God. Hold onto faith. Stay hopeful.
Zechariah did, and God fulfilled his hope. His son, John, prepared the way for Jesus, the hope of all the world.
