Joy to You and Me

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people” (Luke 2:10).

What a message! The angel goes on to say, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11).

Don’t you just love this part of the Christmas story? Immediately after this announcement a choir of angels joins in and sings joyous songs of praise to God.

Can you imagine being the shepherds? They likely felt alone, isolated, and far from any action that would be going on in nearby communities. They may have gone days without seeing anyone other than the small group guarding the sheep. It was just another quiet night, or so they thought.

But that night, they were right where the action was. They received the official announcement of the birth of Jesus under the stars in that vast, lonely place. They, the low working class of the culture, were entrusted with the news of great joy!

God is amazing. He chose the unexpected, the lowly to reveal the news. Had he chosen the high and mighty, the news may not have reached the people. It may have been squelched. After all, the powerful wouldn’t necessarily want ‘all people’ to hear the news. It might threaten their power and expose their tendencies to think themselves better than.

What a way to start a movement. Literally from the ground up. He invites us to be part of that grassroots effort today.

When you feel unseen, know that God sees you. He may not send an angel, but he welcomes you to come and see Jesus, to worship him and spread the good news of great joy to all people.

Who will you spread joy to this Christmas?
